Why you could get arrested if your own gun gets stolen

Detectives conducting investigations, upon receiving information intriguingly managed to recover a pistol(Czeska) loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition from the Pit latrine of 49-year-old Lydia Njeri Mwangi.

The firearm had been reported stolen at Ruai Police Station in January 2019.

The success was recorded after her arrest whereby the suspect led the DCI detectives to the pit latrine which they had to completely empty before the firearm was recovered.

Mass shootings with high-powered assault rifles might attract the most headlines, but lost or stolen, easy-to-conceal handguns are used in shootings every day. Crimes related to these guns range  from domestic violence incidents and road rage to gang vendettas.

While you might feel safe living in a state with strict gun control laws, it is possible for weapons stolen or reported missing to end up in an entirely different state.

The majority of gun-related fatalities occur in common spaces, such as bedrooms, parking lots, bars, and public streets.

If your gun goes missing or ends up in the wrong hands, it’s best to inform your local law enforcement immediately. It’s also important to educate yourself on local and state laws surrounding gun loss.

In some states, officials require mandatory loss reporting; in others law enforcement can charge the registered gun owner with any of the gun’s associated crimes if the firearm was not reported missing before the incident.
