Police in Kisii County are holding a middle-aged woman whom they think may be former Masinde Muliro University graduate and one of the faces behind deadly DusitD2 attack, Violet Kemunto. The woman has been in custody for the last 48 hours and according to our sources, police officers were tipped off by residents of Nyangusu village before the arrest.
Violet Kemunto has been on the run since the DusitD2 attack and intelligence sources believed she had crossed the country into Somalia after the 14 Riverside attack which claimed close to 20 lives. Violet, alias Khadija was the wife of Ali Salim Gichunge, who led the ground operations of the attack and was killed by country’s special forces at the 14 Riverside Drive.
The woman in police custody says she has entered the country on March 21st from Saudi Arabia, but her travel documents and passport bore different names. In the company of the woman is a 38-year-old Tanzanian national who also was in the country illegally and has been in Kisii with the woman.
“For now we are not sure whether the female suspect in custody is the alleged Kemunto. We will leave that to the relevant police officers probing the case,” said Kisii County Commander Martin Kibet.
However, while confirming the arrests and detention of the two, Kisii CID Commander said the arrested woman does no look like Ms. Kemunto, but they will still interrogate her regardless, as finding Kemunto was a matter of national security.
“She really doesn’t look like the Kemunto the police are looking for. Our officers will go to the ground and talk to the area chief and find out where she schooled before we take any further action. The search for Kemunto is a matter of national concern and we will not take any chance in digging out the truth,” said Kisii DCI Commander Kipsoi.
