Thika town MP Wainaina Jungle has slummed the China-Kenya Avacandos deal as being fake and exploitive to the farmers.

On his Facebook post, the MP said that Small-scale avocado farmers are likely to miss out on the Kenya–China avocado export deal due to stringent entry rules including freezing the fruits.

The MP said that China wants Kenyan farmers to freeze the fruits to negative 30°C after peeling off the skin and chill further to negative 18° while in transit to the destination.

“This is what we call “Non-tariff” barriers. CHINA NEVER INTENDED TO BUY OUR AVOS FROM DAY 1… not with what they can get from the Southern part of their country and other preferred sources like Vietnam and South America.

Jungle said that top government officials have turned Kenya into a dumping ground while Kenya has been locked from doing business from every destination.

President Uhuru Kenyatta secured an avocado deal after bilateral talks with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on Thursday at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China.

Kenyan farmers will now export their popular hass avocados to China following the deal signed by Uhuru and Xi Jinping.

The avocado deal makes Kenya the first African nation to export avocados to the Asian nation with a market of over 1.4 billion consumers.

Upon full implementation of the agreement, it is estimated the Chinese market will absorb over 40 per cent of Kenya’s avocado produce, making it one of the largest importers of the fruit.
