Kirinyaga traders count losses as government destroys stalls overnight

Hawkers in Kerugoya town

Kerugoya town traders woke up on Friday to shock when they found that the county government had brought down their stalls.

The unsuspecting traders, who have as a result incurred losses say that the demolitions caught them by surprise.

“The officers took us by surprise and caused massive destruction to property. This government is ruthless and should be rejected,” said one of the traders, Joyce Wanja.

In defense of its actions, the county government claimed that the stalls were illegal since they had been put up on road reserves.

The demolitions caused an uproar in the area, leading to protests by the traders.

“We have been operating in this area for decades but the government is attempting to push us out of business,” Ms Wanja added.

Also in question is that the traders said they have been paying levies for the stalls over time, which the government kept receiving without giving them any prior warning.
