Police in Nairobi was forced to fire live bullets to disperse a rowdy crowd that descended on them after a crackdown aimed at arresting rogue Boda Boda riders in the CBD went wrong.
In a video that has since gone viral, two officers trying to arrest one rider who was caught unaware of the crackdown failed in the mission after hundreds of people shouted on the streets forcing the officers to shoot in the air to disperse the crowd.
According to the former Nairobi County Executive for Roads, Infrastructure and Transport Mohammed Dagane, boda-boda operators are a menace in the city and the county is looking at ways in which they can be cleared from the Central Business District, saying it is a hurdle they are determined to clear.
Nairobi county together with the police has been trying to regulate the industry and remove them from the CBD. “You will find that these operators do not obey the traffic rules and even go against the flow of traffic and this also poses a risk to their pillion passengers,” he says.
