Firebrand Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has told the government that it is not its responsibility to built affordable homes for Kenyans. According to him. the govt does not have the capacity to undertake the project.

Babu says that the controversial 1.5% housing levy on employees salaries is oppressive.

“I support a housing programme that will restore dignity to the people at a rate that they can afford. However, I disagree that it is the Government’s responsibility to build such homes.”

I firmly believe that the Government should focus on providing a conducive environment for the private sector to build the 450,000 affordable homes required. Public taxes cannot build so many homes.#ResistHousingFundLevy— Babu Owino (@Babu_Owino) April 17, 2019

There has been an uproar on social media since on Tuesday, when the govt directed employers to remit the levy tax, starting from next month.

Bloggers and influential Kenyans on social media are now demanding that the government goes back on its move. Kenyans want the government to explain how the money collected will be protected.

This is a government which has for years been unable to built decent houses for the police. How will they be able to do the same thing for the whole population.

And some people are now calling for a revolution. Kenyans believe it is time to go the Sudanese way.

It could be that Uhuru and the Jubilee government have lost touch with reality. Who told them that most Kenyans need houses? Some of us just want a job and a plate of Ugali Skuma.

And we could be seeing a revolution soon, if social media is something to go by.

The big question is who will lead this revolution? Is it Babu Owino? Can we go the Sudan way?
