Soldiers Ulinzi Stars Gun Down Slum Boys Mathare

Ulinzi Stars managed to beat Mathare United 2-0 in a Kenya Premier League (KPL) match played on Sunday.

Elvis Nandwa and Oscar Wamalwa were responsible for condemning Mathare United to the defeat as their strikes gave the Soldiers their second win since coach Benjamin Nyangweso took over.

Ulinzi Stars started with more energy than Mathare United and the army side could have gone ahead in the second minute. Omar Mbongi managed to beat Mathare United’s David Okello but his shot was deflected out for a corner. Ezekiel Okare delivered the corner but Mathare United managed to clear with ease.

Another good chance for Ulinzi Stars came in the 30th minute but no one in red was around to tap in a cross delivered sumptuously by Brian Birgen.

The Slum Boys were saved by Okello from conceding in the first half afrer he denied Elvis Nandwa, who had raced clear on goal after Ulinzi Stars broke through in a counter-attack.

Ulinzi Stars got their deserved lead in the 58th minute after Nandwa’s well-timed diving header was too much for Okello to deal with this time around. Daniel Waweru took credit for creating the first goal witnessed in Nakuru.

Oscar Wamalwa doubled Ulinzi Stars’ lead in the 75th minute after he met Mbongi’s cross. The build-up to the goal saw Mbongi and John Njuguna make good runs from midfield before finding their way into Mathare United’s box to hand Stars the victory.

Mathare United will now have to prepare and shift their focus to their next game against Nzoia Sugar, who were not in action this weekend.

Ulinzi Stars will be in Kisumu to face Western Stima on April 17.
