Gikomba Inferno leaves Millions Destroyed in its wake

In a clear case of when all is said and nothing is done, two months later, history is again repeating itself. Several stalls have been razed down when a fire broke at around 4 am at Line 42, near the bridge.

Property of unknown value has been destroyed as traders count losses. Luckily, there were no casualties.

This not being the first time stalls at the market have gone up in flames, it raised a serious debate online, with netizens questioning the country’s state of disaster preparedness.


So frequent are the fires that some have even labelled it “The Annual Gikomba Market Fire.”

A team of firefighters, police and officials from the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC), Kenya Red Cross and St. John’s Ambulance is still at the scene.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has in the past ordered police to investigate the cause of the perennial fire that destroys property worth millions at Nairobi’s Gikomba Market but nothing seems to bear fruit.
