Real Madrid’s policy of planning for the future by snapping up the best young talent found by their scouts has continued with the signing of 11-year-old Sergio Torres. The youngster was born in Madrid to Peruvian parents and is seen as a Peru’s football jewel, due to his deep roots in the country. Sergio debuted this week by scoring with Alevin B, despite playing with boys a year older than him. Born in 2008, he was noticed while playing in Villaverde, on the Spanish capital’s outskirts for the 2M12 Academy, a small neighbourhood club.
The young striker will join Xabi Alonso’s La Fabrica academy setup which is the Infantil A side – the under-13s.
Xabi Alonso is the great revelation of Real Madrid’s La Fabrica academy setup from this year, which not only produces players but also coaches. The former Madrid midfielder impressed in his debut season on the bench as he took charge of the Infantil A side – the under-13s – and guided them to a league title last Sunday with a record of 22 wins and one draw.
“It’s my first season [coaching] and it has been very positive,” Alonso recognised.
Madrid are delighted with the former No.14’s progress and thus want to promote him up the coaching ladder. They see a lot of potential in Alonso and his profile, which is similar to Zinedine Zidane, excites them.
The club will propose that he takes charge of an older age group in La Fabrica for his second season in charge. Aside from the sporting success, Madrid appreciate his impeccable image, his behaviour, the improvement in the players’ ability, and the great satisfaction players and parents have had with Alonso in charge.
In addition, he has formed a great relationship with his assistant, Sebastian Parrilla, a highly valued coach within Los Blancos and someone who was chosen to help Alonso out during his debut season in charge.
Lots of interest
The former player has had a very positive start to his coaching career and that has alerted several teams who could try to tempt him away with a first team opportunity next summer.
