Astonishing facts you need to know about Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium

Tottenham Hotspur will open their new stadium to fans once again this Saturday and more people will flood inside to discover what the breathtaking place holds.

Last Sunday the club’s new home hosted its first ever match as the U18s beat Southampton 3-1 in front of just under 30,000 fans in the first test event.

This Saturday around 45,000 supporters will make their way inside the state-of-the-art stadium for the second test event, as Spurs legends such as Jurgen Klinsmann, Dimitar Berbatov, David Ginola, Robbie Keane and more take on their Inter Milan counterparts

If both test events are successful then Tottenham will receive the necessary safety certificates to be able to officially and fully open their new 62,062 ground on April 3 for the Premier League match against Crystal Palace.

On Thursday the Mauricio Pochettino led the players in a training session on the pitch at the ground so they can begin their acclimatisation.

Here are some facts and figures about the stadium you might not have known:

The outside

There are 35,000 decorative tiles on the stadium’s exterior. Exactly 4,801 perforated metal panels comprise the stadium’s veil, which are fitted to modular frames fixed to the rear of the stands. The rest of the exterior is made up of 2,505 glass panels.

The seats

It is less than 5m from the pitch to the single-tier south stand, closer than any other Premier League ground. No front row seat is any more than 8m away from the touchline across the stadium.

The stands

The angle of the stands is set at up to 35 degrees. There are 17,500 seats in the south stand – the largest single-tier stand in the UK – with a height of more than 34m.

The pitch 

The pitch dimensions are 105m x 68m which is bigger than White Hart Lane, which was 100m x 67m. The new stadium pitch has exactly the same measurements as Wembley’s.

The grass pitch sits in three pitch-long steel sections, weighing more than 3,000 tonnes each, which are driven by 68 electric motors and rolls along rails using 168 wheels. 

It around 25 minutes to change surfaces between the football and NFL pitch beneath and the hydraulic sides lift up to bring the touchlines to same level as the pitch.

The grass pitch retracts into a storage garage in the south stand when other events are played on artificial surface underneath and it can stay in there for up to ten days thanks to LED lighting, cooling and irrigation systems.

The roof

The circumference of the roof is around 720m and it is made up of 287 glass roof sections and 810 roof cassettes.

In all, 54 ‘flying columns’ create the support between the upper and lower tension rings in the roof and a force of 20,000 tonnes was used to lift the roof into place using tension cables.

The floodlights

Gone are the days of big pylons in each corner of the ground. There are 324 floodlights mounted on the underside of the stadium’s roof in clusters of six.

The screens

There are four main LED video displays inside the stadium bowl totalling more than 1,000sq m, enough to fill both penalty areas. The two in the south stand each measure 325sq m and are the largest stadium screens in western Europe.

There are more screens of a smaller nature with around 1,800 HD TVs throughout the concourse and premium areas.
