Just Like Luthuli, ‘Counterfeit’ Oil Thrives in Kariakor!

A covert operation carried out by Anti-Counterfeit Agency officials alongside police officers led to the discovery of an illegal oil syndicate.

The Tuesday raid which took place in Kariokor unearthed a fake oil refilling workshop where fuel valued at approximately Ksh3 million was seized.

Fake Packaging Equipment

“We seized packaging equipment and oil worth Ksh3 million. They were also in possession of brand labels of Shell, Total Kenya, and National oil,” revealed the anti-counterfeit boss, Ibrahim Bulle.

A report by a local tabloid has disclosed that five people believed to be part of the elaborate scheme have been taken into custody.

Establishment Looked Like an Old Garage

Mr Bulle went on to reveal that the illegal establishment had been disguised as a regular garage but on closer scrutiny, they were able to uncover a vast array of illegal goods.

The officers also impounded oil packaging equipment, bottles, drums and jerrycans that were found within the establishment.

Counterfeit brand labels made to appear to be genuine Shell, Total Kenya, and National Oil merchandise were also seized at the scene.

A Country Of Counterfeit Goods

The latest raid comes a day after the anti-counterfeit agency seized counterfeit mobile phones and phone accessories estimated to be valued at over Ksh8 million.

Accessories impounded included chargers, phone covers, batteries and earphones at a shop located along Luthuli Avenue, Nairobi.

The five arrested following the Kariokor bust were set to be arraigned in court on Wednesday.
