You are SAFE! Met department assures Kenyans of no impending Tsunami after Sunday minor earthquake

The Kenya Meteorological department has allayed fears that Kenya is likely to be hit by a Tsunami. It was previously reported that panic was was rife after the Sunday, March 24, earthquake experienced in about six counties.

Social media was shortly after the 7pm event awash with speculation advising people from the coastal region to migrate to higher grounds to avert wrath of an impending Tsunami. The experts, nonetheless, said the 4.8 magnitude earthquake was mild and could not translate to a Tsunami.

In a tweet, Met further clarified the epicenter of the quake was in Wundanyi, Taita Taveta county and not the Indian Ocean. This, the department explained, had made chances of a Tsunami striking to diminish. “There is no damage expected for a minor earthquake of magnitude between 4 – 4.9 on the Richter scale. Residents at the Coast are urged not to panic as the epicenter was not from the ocean, but from land hence cannot cause a Tsunami,” Met said in a statement.
