Peter Tabichi; The Orphan who rose from the shadows to win 100 million

There is a saying in the teaching profession; It is called Teach and Go home. Public school teachers have heard this statement, more times than they have attended classes.

Most of them claim that, this is the only way to avoid trouble with their employer TSC and officers from the Ministry of Education.

But Peter Tabichi, the Kenyan teacher who won sh 100 million on Sunday night is not cut from the same material as these lazy teachers who only joined the teaching profession for lack of a better option.

The 36 year old Mathematics and Physics teacher at Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School has been teaching students even on weekends.

And it does not end there. He donates 8-% of his salary towards paying their school fees and ensuring the poor kids, most of who are orphans remain in class.

Peter also teachers locals how to plant drought resistant crops. He also runs a peace club at school, which unites seven different ethnic communities.

He also started the talent nurturing club at school. In 2018, his students beat other giants schools in the country at the Science and Engineering Fair.

The teacher has dramatically boosted self esteem and performance in the school which has seen an increase the number of students joining college.

Interestingly, his story has not been all roses. Peter lost his mum when he was just aged 11, leaving his father, a primary-school teacher, with the job of raising him and his siblings alone.

Mr. Tabichi thanked his father for instilling Christian values in him, then invited him on stage and handed him the award to hold as the room erupted in applause and cheers.

I just wish we could have more of these stories coming from Kenya instead of corruption and Drought.
