Peter Tabichi the newly confirmed global teacher of the year is an ardent member of the Franciscan religious order founded by St. Francis of Assisi. 

Brother Tabichi, 36, from Keriko Secondary School in Nakuru was graced to pocket a whooping Sh. 100 million prize.

Franciscans are members of a religious order that follows the teachings of Francis of Assisi, a Catholic friar, mystic, and “saint.” Franciscans are usually Catholic.

Following the traits exuded by the cream teacher that propelled him clinch the prestigious award, Daily Active has outlined some key facts about the Franciscans.

Franciscans live a life of penance that includes prayer, fasting, and thanksgiving.

Charism of the Franciscans is poverty.  Not only do they live a life of poverty in varying forms – from the traditional vows to the more extreme eremitical adoption of begging and refusal to manage money or own anything other than their clothing – but they also work steadfastly for the cause of the poor and disenfranchised. 

They practice Priestly celibacy thus cannot marry.

Throughout the centuries, the families of the Franciscans Order adopted gray and brown colors (in many shades: light, dark, chestnut, reddish) … and even black.

In general, they take traditional vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience with an emphasis on serving the poor and marginalized in their communities.
