Emotions ran high as the plane carrying the remains of a Kenyan doctor who died in Cuba on Sunday touched down Friday at the Moi International Airport, Mombasa. The death of a Kenyan doctor in Cuba has continued to elicit mixed reactions from different quarters.

The government was alleged to have sent a team of experts to Cuba to assess the situation after the doctor allegedly committed suicide. The death of Dr Hamisi Ali Juma, a brother to Likoni MP Mishi Mboko, has revealed the sad state of affairs Kenyan doctors face while in foreign nation. 

Family members, including Likoni MP Mishi Mboko who is a sister to Dr Ali Hamisi Juma were at the airport to receive the body.  No family member was immediately available to talk to the media.

The body has been transferred to the Coast Provincial General Hospital for an autopsy by a private pathologist.

There are reports that the medics live in deplorable conditions as they seek knowledge abroad. Juma was among 50 Kenyan doctors sponsored by the government to Cuba where he was pursuing a Masters Degree.

On Wednesday, Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki confirmed that the government had sent experts to Cuba to analyze the situation following uproar from the public.

The team is expected to assess the situation and document all the challenges the doctors have been facing in the foreign before action is taken.  “I have today sent a team from the ministry to carry out the assessment of the programme,” she said,

On Thursday, Hamisi Kurichwa, an elder brother to the doctor, said they would conduct a private post-mortem to ascertain the cause of death of their brother. His remains will be interred after Friday’s Juma Prayers at 1pm
