Gun violence comes back to haunt lawyer’s family

It now emerges that troubled lawyer Assa Nyakundi, who shot dead his son, had had his father killed in similar circumstances.

Questions of Mr Assa Nyakundi turning the gun on his own son reopened the wounds on an incident which happened almost a decade ago, and left his father, Michael Nyakundi dead.

A dangerously armed gang had stormed their home and forced Mr Michael Nyakundi to lie on his bed, before shooting him at close range as his wife watched.

Eliud Nyakundi, Assa’s younger brother, who is a bishop cited it was a big blow to the family.

Double tragedy

“The Sunday incident has left us in shock. It is double tragedy with one of our own dead and another in hospital,” he stated.

Speaking to a local daily, the bishop added that memories of the late father only added salt to the injury.

On Sunday, lawyer Assa Nyakundi shot dead his son in a Toyota Allion.

From church

The two had just attended service at ICC Church along Mombasa Road and were heading to their home in Muthaiga North.

The city lawyer was hospitalized following breathing complications while he was reporting the incident at the Muthaiga Police Station, where he stated the shooting was accidental.

Autopsy results released on Thursday reveal that Joseph Nyakundi could have been shot from outside the car and not inside as it had been first reported.

Reports indicate the cause of death is chest injuries and haemorrhage due to gunshot from a low-velocity firearm.

“The shot projection from the chest exiting at the back suggested that whoever shot him was standing outside the rear right back door of motor vehicle KCE 753B Toyota Allion which belongs to the father of deceased,” read part of the report.

“The angle of shooting according to the projection could be ninety degrees, suggesting there was a confrontation,” the report added.
