The scourge of a stereotyped Kikuyu woman. Insights from the Barclays ‘wash wash’ scandal

Is it a coincidence that the only two female suspects caught in the Barclays bank scandal are both from central region? I think not.

If there is a class of Kenyans that is totally denigrated, despised and derided, it has to be the Kikuyu women. Every terrible thing that can be said about them has been said a million times over. We have questioned their appetite for money, culinary skills, body shapes and bedroom abilities. We harbour this inexplicable contempt towards them that is getting out of hand.

The fact that two women were caught in the fake money scandal only serves to deepen the stereotypes surrounding the daughters of Mumbi.

Very little is still known about the two, Miss Elizabeth Muthoni and counterpart Miss Irene Wairimu Kimani except their ethnic affiliation. But that alone is enough to make some substantive conclusions about the two based on where they’re both from.

Daughters of Mumbi can pride themselves of having some of the world’s strongest, most ambitious ladies , at least on this little corner of the earth.

Kikuyu women are socialized to have their own money all the while independence is preached from birth, generation to generation, like a secret cult ritual.

Are Kikuyu women materialistic? Yes, but which woman isn’t? That character trait is not exclusively inherent in kikuyu’s only as all women are innately wired to marrying upwards on the social class ladder. Kikuyu women just happen to be better at achieving this goal.

Kikuyu women’s ambition knows no limits, as the two suspects have certainly proven to the world by now. They know no titles or degrees when money is at stake.

People have often cried that they are gold- diggers and money lovers, but like the two Barclays suspects prove, they would much rather make their own money without depending on any man.

Granted, not all their mechanisms are legal or proper for any lady,( for the most part) they get sh*t done nonetheless!

You would have to be a fool not to acknowledge how industrious these lasses are! Ask an elderly Kikuyu woman what she wants at 80 years and you will be surprised at her response. As old as she may be, her dream to own residential apartments or have several matatus is still alive. They never go wrong in business and she will push you to start that business you have been postponing for years until you wake up from that comfort zone.

Their upbringing has a huge role to play in this as from a tender age, Mumbi’s daughters are socialized to be hard working and independent from their (mostly) single mothers. They look up to their mother’s tough skin and super woman nature and inevitably grow up to be just as bad ass!

Majority of successful women in business are Kikuyu’s. These women work hard for their money and fear nothing. Hence many would rather take their children and raise them alone a opposed to having a ‘good-for-nothing’ abusive man hanging around just because he donated sperms.

The Barclays bank scandal has shocked Kenyans out of a stupor to seeing how illegal activities are run right under our noses. We are grateful to the DCI. But in another world where maybe something like that would be condoned, and at the risk of sounding uncanny, can you imagine how far the Barclays scam would have gone with only Kikuyu women running the show?

The possibilities are endless!
