First it was fake billions, now fake gold, what else could be lurking in Barclays bank amid scandal?

Just two days after confiscating suspected fake Ksh. 2.6 billion at the same bank, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives have discovered fake gold bars at Barclays Bank’s branch in Nairobi.

The fresh discovery was made on Wednesday, March 20, amid investigations into how the multi-million dollar fake currency found its way into the otherwise highly reputable bank.

It was established the fake gold bars, which were initially suspected to be bomb, prompting the DCI detectives to invite their colleagues from the bomb disposal unit to the scene, were found in the same safe deposit box where the KSh .2.6 billion fake currency was discovered days earlier. The DCI boss George Kinoti who led the high-level operation said the gold would be added to the fake dollars as exhibits to be presented in court.

The investigators had already unveiled faces of the suspects believed to be behind the depositing of fake currency in the safe box at the Barclays Bank’s Queensway branch along Mama Ngina street in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).

The identities of the suspected criminals who covered their faces during arrest were made public a few hours after their dramatic arrests at the Barclays Bank following a tip-off.
