Who will awaken Kenyan Football’s sleeping giant?

Gor Mahia’s qualification into the quarter finals of the CAF confederations Cup made even those not heavily engaged in the sport appreciate or take note of this incredible achievement. Simply put, Gor Mahia are the best team on Kenyan soil by a mile which leads to the question; why are AFC Leopards not getting even close to this level of success despite being the second most successful team in the land?

AFC Leopards struggles and troubles have been vastly documented over the years but never have we seen the club make any serious attempt at fixing the mess that threatens to cripple this prestigious club. The constant fixing of round pegs in square holes only makes the situation even worse but we are now at a point where someone needs to stand up and save the Leopards from eternal mediocrity.

For starters, the management team needs a complete overhaul, the club needs people who are invested in making the actions on the pitch better instead of their pockets! We always see constant changes in playing and coaching staff but rarely does the same occur in the management structure or personnel. Antony Kimani’s appointment is the latest in a series of weak attempts at change.Make no mistake about Kimani’s qualities, he has a very good football brain and will go on to make very good coaching career but whether that is at the Den remains highly doubtful.

There have been others who were maybe better than him but failed, miserably! Look at it this way, Leopards have possibly the largest fan base in the country, very good finances and with the ability to attract top talents from around the country and even beyond but are currently deep in a relegation dog fight with the likes of Mount Kenya United. That is simply unacceptable!

Kenyan football needs AFC Leopards to do far much better than their current situation, we need them challenging Gor Mahia for the title, we need a mashemeji derby that is not just another straight forward win for K’ogallo. Someone needs to step up and be counted as the man who awakened the sleeping giant that is AFC Leopards, who will it be?

Will Geoffrey Oduor clean up the system and save Kenyan rugby?

In an election exercise carried out at the RFUEA Grounds on Wednesday evening, Geoffrey Oduor Gangla has been elected as the new Kenya Rugby Union chairman after beating his closest rival Sasha Mutai.

Oduor garnered 33 votes, beating former vice chairman Sasha Mutai who polled 20 votes.

The elections were held at the RFUEA grounds and were presided over by IEBC official Martin Simatwa.

Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) resolved to go on with their AGM despite efforts by the Ministry of Sports to halt the elections.

An impromptu KRU Board meeting on Tuesday night at RFUEA grounds resolved that the meeting, where elections for KRU chairmanship and three board members will take place, must go on as per the Union’s constitution.

This decision is anchored upon clause 12.4 of the KRU constitution which provides that a duly constituted General Meeting can only be adjourned at that particular meeting.”

Gangla had late on Tuesday indicated in a statement that the ministry had requested for the postponement so as to allow for a stakeholders meeting to sort out the problems in rugby before the election.

Will he make the Kenyan Rugby team shine in the world again?

Why Mane fears facing Kalidou Koulibaly on a Manchester United Jersey

Anfield star Sadio Mane has hilariously responded to a banner which was unveiled by Manchester United fans during a training session with the Senegalese national squad.

In the video the centre-forward, who has been in excellent form scoring 11 goals in his last 11 appearances for Liverpool, can be seen approaching excited Senegal supporters at the side of the training field.

The group of fans gathered are holding up a banner which has a picture of centre-half Kalidou Koulibaly in a Man United shirt and with a message requesting he signs for the Red Devils.

Jurgen Klopp’s man of the moment, Mane does not take kindly to the poster and in comical fashion puts his thumb down repeatedly and can be seen smiling and laughing.

The Napoli defender has been in imperious form in Serie A and there is growing interest from a number of Europe’s top clubs.

After solid displays for Carlo Ancelotti’s side against Liverpool in the Champions League group stage many Reds supporters think the 27-year-old would be solid alongside Virgil van Dijk.

It will be interesting to see where the hot property defender ends up this summer but one thing is for sure, his compatriot Mane does not seem keen on the idea of Koulibaly signing for one of Liverpool’s most fierce rivals.

Your brother is your inspiration…Jurgen Klopp tells Mohamed Salah as title race intensifies

Jurgen Klopp believes Mohamed Salah can learn from “brilliant” teammate Sadio Mane to help end his Liverpool goal drought.

Salah is without a goal in his last seven game as he struggles with his longest barren run since moving to Anfield in summer 2017.

Mane has taken up the mantle with 11 goals in his last 11 games to keep Liverpool’s Premier League and Champions League hopes alive.

Klopp feels that Mane is simply doing “exactly what Mo has to do”.

“He is in a really good moment, of course,” he told Liverpoolfc.com

“Sadio played pretty much always like this but now he is always in the right spot in the right moment. In football it’s sometimes like this.

“The only thing he did when he was not always in the right spot was work and work and work. That’s exactly what Mo has to do, exactly the same: just work, do the right things and it will come again.

“He’s just rather unlucky, where Sadio is lucky in the moment – he is in brilliant shape, that’s true.

“But then, he is in the right shape and maybe a yard away from him is Mo, but somebody else scored; the cross from Robbo [at Fulham], I’m pretty sure Mo would have scored if Gini doesn’t get the ball.

“These moments… I was a striker, I had that as well, you think, ‘Oh’ and then somebody else missed the chance. That’s how it is, all good.

“But, of course, it’s a brilliant moment for him [Mane].”

Pogba calls on Man Utd to give Solskjaer what he ‘deserves’

Paul Pogba Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Manchester United

Paul Pogba wants Manchester United to reward Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a permanent deal following his success as caretaker manager.

Since Solskjaer replaced Jose Mourinho in December the Red Devils have given themselves a chance of a top-four finish in the Premier League, while they are into the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

A number of players have been revitalised under Solskjaer, including Pogba, who has bagged nine goals and provided seven assists in 17 matches.

And the France international would love for the Norwegian to get the job on a permanent basis.

“Of course we want him to stay,” Pogba said of Solskjaer, speaking to Sky Sports. “The results have been great. I have a great relationship with him, he has a great relationship with the players.

“When a player is happy, he wants to keep being happy. Solskjaer deserves it. He knows the club, he knows everything about the club.

“He is a really happy coach that gave confidence back to the players.

“This gave us the freedom to play and enjoy football again because maybe we lost that with the results that we had before.”

Evra: I am not homophobic, I am ‘Mr I love this game’

Paris Saint-Germain have alleged that Patrice Evra used “homophobic insults” to criticise the club, with their former player denying he is homophobic.

Manchester United beat PSG in the Champions League after staging a brilliant comeback in the second leg at the Parc des Princes – which Evra attended.

The former France captain was seen in a social media video on Monday along with another man in a car, responding to followers views on PSG, he said “this is Manchester. Stop going off on one (about PSG) and validating teams who will never win anything.”

It was reported he is understood to have used ‘two anti-gay slurs’ while also adding “we’re men speaking here”.

PSG said in a statement: “These remarks profoundly shocked the club, which is particularly committed to the values of respect and inclusiveness.”

However, Evra took to Twitter to quickly reject he was homophobic and criticise the French media over the incident.

“They translate it as I am against the gay people,” Evra responded. “I am not homophobic, I am ‘Mr I love this game’.

“I love everyone. So if I offended someone I apologise. But it is not my intention. I understand equality. You have to be free whatever you do in life.

“I would never judge anyone. My mum raised me that way. Only God can judge me. We need to make the world a better place so please stop this negativity because you will never shut me down.”
