Kitui woman arrested for faking pregnancy

Ann Mungwele, a married woman has been jailed for seven years for faking a pregnancy to steal a four-month old baby. She stole a baby belonging to Celestine Ikambili Shikulu in Nairobi’s Jacaranda estate.The baby later died.

The court heard that the accused parted ways with her husband after he learned that she had faked the pregnancy and labour pains. Mungwele is said to have sought refuge at Shikulu’s home after separating with her husband.

She waited until the complainant was away and stole the baby. The court heard that the accused fled to her home in Kitui where she lied to her parents that she had just delivered a baby.

The baby is said to have developed health complications and died later. Mungwele was traced to her home and arrested. The baby, according to post-mortem results, died of pneumonia. Mungwele pleaded guilty to the offence and was jailed for seven years.
