Following the public out cry, detectives are investigating the mysterious death of a Form 1 student at Gatanga CCM Secondary School in Murang’a county.

County police commander Josphat Kinyua said an autopsy report shows the girl, Ebby Samuels, died from a head injury.

The report shows she may have injured her head after falling from her double-decker bed.

Kinyua said the school management failed to report the incident and the matter has been taken up by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.

He said the autopsy was carried out by three pathologists at a Nairobi funeral home.

Students who slept in the same dormitory with the deceased, Kinyua said, are being quetioned by the police.

The death of the student at the weekend caused an uproar as the family demanded investigations.

Martha Wanjiru, Samuels’ mother, said her daughter had complained of chest pains on Friday but the school refused to take her to a health facility.

Her friends went to check on her on Saturday morning when she failed to wake up and alerted the administration when she did not respond.

The girl was then rushed to a hospital and Wanjiru was contacted and asked to go to the facility.

Medics said her daughter had passed away long before she got to the hospital, the mother said.

Wanjiru accused the school of negligence, saying her daughter’s life may have been saved if she been taken to a hospital on Friday.

“I want a thorough investigation because the information I have received from the school is not satisfying,” she said.

The principal did not respond to calls for comment.

County education director Ann Kiilu said a team of officials from the Ministry of Education has been dispatched to the school to gather more information.

The autopsy results, she said, will inform the next course of action by her department.

Last year, a KCSE candidate collapsed and died at Gaichanjiru Secondary School, Kandara, during an entertainment session.
