National men’s basketball Special Olympics team won four out of seven opening matches as the 2019 Special Olympic Games kicked off Wednesday night in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
The seven day games are set to continue on Friday in various playing grounds.
Kenya started its quest for a Gold medal in the 2019 special Olympic Games on a high note with the men’s basketball team registering four wins out of 7 opening fixtures.
The team claimed a 8-0 points win over African counterparts Algeria before hammering Chinese Taipei by 16 points to 11. Kenya then thrashed Nigeria 8 points to 2 and claimed a narrow 9 points to 8 victory over Luxembourg.
The team however registered three losses; 11-4 point’s to Russia, 20-5 points to home side United Arab Emirates and a 7-6 loss to Ivory Coast. Kenya’s next match will be against Belgium on Friday.
Meanwhile, the national Girls volleyball team registered two straight wins in the opening round after beating Jamaica and Serbia by a similar margin of two sets to nil.
In the last edition of the games held in 2015 in Los Angeles, United States, Kenya bagged a total of 42 medals, 22 Gold, 2 Silver, and 18 Bronze medals.
