Residents of Kaplelachkorol village in West Pokot County have opposed plans to construct a sewerage treatment plant claiming it is a health hazard.
The plant aimed at improving sanitation in the region is funded by the African Development bank and the National Government at a cost of Ksh 600 million.
The project is expected to take 36 months to complete even as residents say there was no public participation on the same, while local leaders claim the construction has turned political.
A meeting between residents and Rift valley water services board representatives to deliberate on the same turned chaotic after locals turned it into a demonstration saying they Government is forcing the project on them.
Efforts by the provincial administration and the water service provider to convince locals that the project will not have any negative impact on their health and environment has fallen on deaf ears.
Rift valley water services board in charge of water and Environment Engineer Phillip Kimeli said the project will improve sanitation and address challenges of adverse water borne diseases which are rampant in the area.
He said that survey and feasibility study is being carried out calling on residents to support the project.
