Mutuyimana was killed on Friday night by yet to be identified assailants. The development was confirmed by Ingabire on her twitter handle.

Ingabire was among the more than 2,000 prisoners freed last year in September by Rwanda strongman Paul Kagame.

She was arrested in 2010 and given a 14-year sentence two years later. She was convicted of a terrorist conspiracy to undermine the government and downplaying Rwanda’s 1994 genocide but says the charges were a fabrication and politically motivated.
