Mukuru Kayaba slums on Fire

Residents of Mukuru Kayaba Slums in South B, (Nairobi) are counting loses after a huge fire destroyed their houses leaving several families homeless on Thursday night.

The fierce fire swept through the Mukuru Kayaba informal settlements (Slums), with properties of unknown value going up in flames as residents battled to contain the fire that was spreading rapidly.

Kenya Redcross and the Nairobi County Fire Brigade were among the first to rush to the scene to coordinate emergency rescue efforts.

The course of the fire is still unknown with no casualty reported so far.

“A huge fire in Mukuru Kayaba Slums (Maasai village to be precise) The saddest thing is a fire station is just few meters away but they’re taking forever. @MikeSonkowhat happened to your fire engines” reads some of the tweets.

The Mukuru Kayaba slum is prone to fire, in September last year, residents in the informal settlement were left counting loses after another fire razed down their houses.

“19 Sep 2018. Today I joined Hon. Jaguar, Member of Parliament for Starehe Constituency as he toured Mukuru/Kayaba Slums in South B ward to condole with the fire victims who were left homeless after a fire incident razed down their homes.” Wrote Chipukeezy.
