Passaris calls for action to eliminate discrimination and violence against women

Nairobi Women Rep Esther Passaris has called for action in the efforts to eliminate discrimination and violence against women.

Esther Passaris was today presiding over the Nairobi County International Women’s Day Celebrations when she gave these remarks.

The Women Rep said that now is the time to walk the talk on eliminating all forms of discrimination and violence against women and girls in private and public spheres.

She also urged the public to commit to give women equal access to education, health care, decent work and representation in all political and economic decision-making processes with the belief that a city that embraces equality is a prosperous city. 

The Women Rep has been in the frontline condemning violence and her remarks during the International Women’s day come after she yesterday condemned technology assisted violence against women.

Esther Passaris had attended an event on National dialogue to discuss strategies of mitigating technology assisted violence against women.

The women rep stated that tech assisted violence  is a concerted effort to censor women who are vocal and hyper visible.

She also added that It leads to loss of privacy, prejudice, emotional and reputational harm as it widens the digital gender gap.

The Nairobi Women Rep recommended that the Penal Code should be  revised to create a provision with a rider for an aggrevated level where technology is used to commit offences.

She also gave a call that the Sexual Offenses Act 2006 should include cyber stalking, online harassment & distribution of offensive material
