Nyandika Maiyoro laid to rest as Kenya loses three of its legendary Olympians in two months

Kenya is set to lay another track and field legend to rest. The late Nyantika Maiyoro will be buried this afternoon at his home in Kiogoro, Kisii County.

The gathering is expected to attract some ‘tension’ amid increasing concerns about the government’s treatment of national heroes during their hours of need.

The late veteran had been ailing for some time and was admitted at the Christamarianne Hospital in Kisii County, where he was said to have been diagnosed with Tuberculosis.

Mayaka, a Commonwealth Games javelin bronze medalist, was laid to rest at his home in Nyamira County on Thursday, March 7.

John Mayaka died two weeks ago at Nyamira Level five hospital after struggling with a disease as described by his daughter Stella Mayaka.

As if that is not enough, the country will again bury another trailblazer, Daniel Matasi Rudisha in the coming days.

Rudisha died on Wednesday night at the age of 73 years.

The late, alongside Munyoro Nyamau, Naftali Bon and Charles Asati won the 400m relay silver medal at the 1968 Mexico Olympics.

Earlier, David Rudisha had called on Kenyans to pray for his ailing father.

In past interviews, Rudisha is on record saying that his dad (Daniel) inspired him to become the fastest 800m runner there has ever been.

According to the legend, he tries to be the same inspiration to his kids.
