Cops abusing their power to steal land in ‘jail’

Three police officers and five security guards have been charged with breaking into a warehouse in Nairobi and stealing.

The officers identified as Philip Thuo Kangethe, Shadrack Josiah Mumo and Joseph Ndiku Mwongela are alleged to have colluded with Simon Ong’ori, Martin Otabu, Wycliffe Chanyi, Daniel Kioko Ngozi and David Njogu Mwaniki to steal 7,224 pieces of Genie energy saving lamps and 320 top plugs, all valued at Sh900,178. .

Police said the property belonged to Nabico Enterprises Limited. The accused also faced an alternative charge of handling stolen property.

Police said they sprang into action and arrested the accused persons after a tipoff from members of the public. It is alleged that one of the accused officers flashed his official identity card in an attempt to escape arrest, but it was a little too late.

The accused denied the charges in court and were released on Sh500,000 bond each. The matter will be heard on June 20.
