Sonko orders removal of Billboards erected without County’s approval

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has ordered the removal of billboards erected without the County’s approval as part of the efforts to end impunity.

The Nairobi City County Government yesterday initiated a process to remove all billboards and outdoor advertising structures that have been erected without approval in accordance with the Nairobi City County Outdoor Advertising Act 2018.

The Governor also issued a reminder to outdoor advertising firms that some of the agreements reached between the county government and the firms are as follows;

1. No one shall erect any advertising structure within the county without first seeking and being granted approval by the Nairobi City County Government.

2. Every billboard and outdoor advertising structures must be well branded so that the owner is easily identified, failure to which such structures shall be removed.

3. All billboards should not exceed the maximum dimension of 10 by 12 meters.

4. Companies with approval to erect single-sided billboards cannot convert them to become double-sided billboards without first seeking and obtaining approval from the County Government.

5. All billboards and advertising structure owners must declare the exact number of all their structures, as well as the monthly occupancy and settle their dues to the county government by the 10th of every month. Any failure to do amounts to an attempt to conceal information for the purpose of evading to pay county revenue.

The Governor also maintained that Nairobi City County Government relies on revenue to provide services and therefore evading tax makes it difficult to finance much needed services in the city.
