Inspiration: Find out how Kylie Jenner built her billionaire empire at just 21 years

Forbes on Tuesday named Kylie Jenner the “youngest self-made billionaire ever” in its annual list of the world’s richest people. The 21-year-old cosmetics mogul reached the milestone at an age younger than Facebook’s Zuckerberg, who was 23 when he earned the ranking.

What her half-sister Kim Kardashian West did for booty, Jenner has done for full lips. Like Kardashian West, she has leveraged her assets to gain both fame and money. But while her sister is best-known for the former, Jenner has proved adept at the latter. In historic fashion.

Jenner runs one of the hottest makeup companies ever. Kylie Cosmetics launched two years ago with a $29 “lip kit” consisting of a matching set of lipstick and lip liner, and has sold more than $630 million worth of makeup since, including an estimated $330 million in 2017.

Jenner at 21 is worth $1 billion, according to Forbes, thanks in part to her company Kylie Cosmetics signing an exclusive deal with Ulta Beauty last year. Jenner owns 100 percent of HER company. The money she’s made from the business has helped push her into billionaire status. Bloomberg on Tuesday also named Jenner the world’s youngest self-made billionaire, citing its daily ranking of the richest people.

“I didn’t expect anything. I did not foresee the future,” Jenner told Forbes about the ranking. “But [the recognition] feels really good. That’s a nice pat on the back.”

Kylie Jenner got so rich, in part, because of her manager (and mother) Kris Jenner. Momager don’t play.

Kylie gets most of her money out of her cosmetic line. She first started it by producing and selling lip kits (a matte liquid lip + a lip liner), right after there was a lot of drama around her getting her lips done, at only 17. Then, she expanded her brand and now sells eyeshadow palettes, eye liners, make up brushes…

As ultralight startups go, Jenner’s operation is essentially air.  She’s outsourced alot of the major work like manufacturing, packaging and sales.

Basically, all Jenner does to make all that money is leverage her social media following. Almost hourly, she takes to Instagram and Snapchat, pouting for selfies with captions about which Kylie Cosmetics shades she’s wearing, takes videos of forthcoming products and announces new launches.

It sounds inane until you realize that she has over 110 million followers on Instagram and millions more on Snapchat, and many of them are young women and girls–an audience at once massive and targeted, at least if you’re selling lip products. And that’s before the 16.4 million who follow her company directly, or the 25.6 million who follow her on Twitter, or the occasional social media assists from her siblings and friends.

Kylie also got a lot of comments on her plastic surgeries and “perfect body”. She recently started selling clothes that she models.
