Margaret Kenyatta to preside over Wangari Maathai Day Celebrations

First Lady Margaret Kenyatta will today preside over the celebration of #WangariMaathaiDay and Africa Environment Day 2019.

Top leaders, environmental enthusiasts and Kenyans have today gathered
at the August 7th Memorial Park where the Wangari Maathai Day celebrations will be held.

As part of the celebrations, Margaret Kenyatta will also officially open the Wangari Maathai Conference Hall.

The Green Belt movement celebrates the late Professor Maathai as a woman who lived a life of firsts – the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate degree; the first woman to be appointed professor at the University of Nairobi; the first environmentalist and the first African woman Nobel Peace Prize Laureate.

The nation is also celebrating her as a woman who dedicated her life to promoting environmental conservation and sustainable development in Africa.

Margaret Kenyatta this morning planted an East African Greenheart tree together with the Green Belt movement as part of a symbol of honour for this day.
