Gang kills 5 security guards in market attack

Just a few metres from a police station, an unknown gang is suspected of killing five security guards at Kilingili market on the border of Kakamega and Vihiga Counties.

The gang suspected to be on a burglary mission moved from business premise to killing the guards in cold blood.

According to the residents, they found the bodies of four guards lying at different spots in the market while one of them who was still alive was rushed to Vihiga Referral Hospital where he succumbed while receiving treatment.

The deceased, who were hacked to death, were identified as John Ondachi, Francis Osayo, Linus Anyiga, Thomas Miano and Charles Kalume.

One of the residents, Caleb Miano, a son of one of the deceased, said his 70-year-old father had been working as a night guard at Kilingili market for more than 10 years and had raised concern about insecurities in the area.

“My father was complaining about insecurity issues in the area and that people have been attacked but no action had been taken,” he said.

With the trail of killings happening just 100 metres from the area police station, the residents are now calling for an overhaul of officers at the station.

Tension remains high in the area with the motive behind the bloodbath yet to be established
