Details have emerged indicating that at least 10 lecturers at Embu University under investigations for allegedly having sex with their students in exchange for good grades.

The explosive revelations were made by the University’s Vice Chancellor Prof. Daniel Mugendi confirming that sex for good grades scandals has hit the institution with ten suspects so far and who are scheduled to appear before Embu University’s disciplinary committee.

This is just but a representation of what happens in our higher learning institutions. No wonder we girl child scooping first class honors in many occasions.

In a worrying trend, the VC divulged that some suspects even coerced the students they had impregnated into procuring abortions in a bid to cover their trails.

“I have at least ten [staff-student sexual relationship] cases that I am solving currently. Some of the male suspects even forced the students they impregnated into procuring abortions. They even threatened the learners against speaking out, warning them that if they do, they’ll get into a lot of trouble. Said Prof. Mugendi.

Mugendi regretted that despite a strict code of ethics barring teaching and non-teaching staff at the university from engaging in romantic and sexual relations with students at the institution, the same has been happening with at least ten suspects under investigations so far with victims often threatened with “dire consequences”.


Grades From Intimacy

“When you look at our students, some of them might look like potential wives and potential husbands. The rule is that you [university staff] cannot engage in a [romantic] relationship with our students,” the VC said.

“Many of these students have also earned marks transmitted sexually. I would tell the university staff, if you want wives, go to Chuka, Kirinyaga or Murang’a universities; we won’t have any issues with you. But as long as it is our students, we have an obligation — as Embu University’s administration — to take care of them,” said Prof. Mugendi.

While addressing students and staff at the institution on Friday, the VC urged students feeling harassed and coerced into sexual relationships with the university’s staff members to collect as much evidence as they and report the incidents to relevant administrators at the institution.
