The Director of Criminal Investigations has sworn with his own life that he will never be part and parcel of covering for police officers who kill innocent civilians.
Kinoti on Thursday said he has served within the police service for a long time and was able to identify those behind kidnappings and gruesome murders.
The DCI boss was speaking in Kayole during the community dialogue on extra-judicial killings.
He was accompanied by the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji.
“I want to be charged here. I stand before you and declare that anybody be it under my command or myself that will ever cover up for someone who has killed an innocent person. May God himself curse me. No one will ever cover for a police officer who kills under my watch.” Kinoti said.
Kinoti said it is unfortunate that innocent people are being killed.
He said even some police officers just end up killing the wrong people and that cannot be termed as extrajudicial killing but crime.
“There is no word like extrajudicial killings but we have unlawful killings by police officers. Some of us kill innocent people.”
Cases of extra-judicial killings have been reported occasionally.
According to a report by the International Justice Mission, 22 cases have been reported where the police used excessive force even in circumstances involving minors.
One example involves a 23-year-old man who died of multiple gunshot injuries to the head and the chest in 2014. Brian Ondeko was a second-hand shoe dealer in Kawangware area, Nairobi.
