Corruption is a cancer that is taking Kenya fast to her knees and the nation is regarded as one of the hotbeds of corruption in Africa claiming a position among the top five Africa-wide.
The fight against corruption has since taken a different angle and a higher note with the President warning those implicated in corruption cases. The Judiciary has also tightened the war which was seen in the recent moves of several officials to other operation fronts with the CJ asking the DPP to provide solid evidence.
Cotu Secretary General Francis Atwoli has said Kenyans will hunt down corrupt individuals if the government fails to arrest them.He said workers will take matters into their own hands if people accused of corruption are left to roam free.
“If some of them will not be put in jail, I can tell you, your Excellency, that citizens are going to take action,” Atwoli said.
He spoke on Wednesday during the 30th anniversary of the Pan-African Unions Trade in Nairobi which was officially opened by the former Premier, Raila Odinga.Atwoli also said corruption is derailing the country’s development and only the rich and corrupt individuals are able to succeed.
He said workers fully support the President in the war on corruption.
“I want to tell the President of this country that workers are behind him in the fight against graft,” Atwoli said.
The President has reiterated his warning to corrupt state officials, saying they will pay dearly for every coin they steal from the public if found guilty.
During his address during the 55th Jamhuri Day celebrations at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi on December last year, Uhuru said that nobody entrusted to hold public office has the right to demand a bribe or to squander public resources.
“To those engaging in fraud and abuse of office, please listen to me keenly, you can run but you cannot hide,” he said.
“We will catch up with you, and make you pay dearly for every coin stolen. The broom that is sweeping across the nation will soon find its way to your doorsteps.” Uhuru said.
