Legend Mayioro’s family announce burial date

The family of the late legendary athlete Nyantika Maiyoro who passed on Saturday, has announced that he will be laid to rest on March 8 at his rural home in Nyaribari-Kiogoro in Kisii County.

According to his son Kennedy Nyantika, the deceased body will be moved from the morgue on Thursday,  March 7 and will make stop overs at Isoge settlement scheme and Gusii Stadium before heading home.

“Mzee’s body will leave the mortuary on Thursday morning and thereafter we will make head to Isoge settlement scheme where Mzee spent much time for the locals to pay their last respect. Thereafter we will return to Gusii town for the public to view and at around 4.30pm in the evening the body will leave for his home in Kiogoro,” said Nyantika.

Nyantika said the burial arrangements are progressing well and that the family is working closely with friends in order to accord the legend a befitting send off.

“As a family we have committee working on the burial arrangements. Similarly, we have support from the local community, the church, Athletics Kenya, the National Olympic Committee of Kenya and the government,” explained the junior Nyantika.

Maiyoro who was the first athlete to represent Kenya in Olympic Games died aged 88 at a Kisii hospital after succumbing to Tuberculosis.
