Police are investigating the case of a Form Three student who was said to have committed suicide in a toilet at the Nairobi Women’s Hospital.
The 17-year-old was a student at a secondary school in Kikuyu, Kiambu County. She had been complaining of pain in the stomach and vomiting when she was admitted to the hospital on Friday .
Officials said they believed that she took her own life after learning that she was pregnant. According to preliminary findings, scans had revealed that she was nine weeks pregnant.
“This seemed to have shocked her and we believe it led to the unfortunate incident,” said an official.
The body was found hanging in the toilet on Saturday afternoon after she was reported missing from her bed. Police were called and the body was taken to the mortuary after her parents were informed of the incident.
Kilimani OCPD Michael Muchiri said the matter was being investigated.
The incident comes just weeks after a Form Three student committed suicide at Butere Girls High School in Kakamega County. The girl’s body was found hanging from the dormitory roof with a suicide note believed to have been authored by her.
Last year, there were several reports of students committing suicide, especially after national examinations results were released.
