Liverpool chief makes transfer pledge as Jurgen Klopp eyes summer targets

Jurgen Klopp will be given the full backing from the Liverpool board to spend big in the summer transfer window – despite proposed plans to further extend their stadium.

The Reds boss brought four players to Anfield in the close season for a combined total of £173 million, and is yet to win a trophy with the club.

However, Liverpool managing director Billy Hogan has said “nothing will be a distraction” from providing resources for the German boss to improve his squad.

It was revealed earlier this month that the Merseyside club had announced pre-tax profits of £125 million, which takes into account the acquisition of Virgil Van Dijk (£75m) and the sale of Philippe Coutinho (£142m).

And despite a major overhaul of the Main Stand at Anfield, as well as the training complex in Kirby, Hogan insists there is money available for reinforcements.

Speaking of the developments to fcbusiness via Liverpool Echo, Hogan said: “That represents a significant investment into the non-playing side and that is a great indication of where we are as a club, both on and off the pitch.

“From our perspective, what you are seeing is a continuation of that performance on the pitch and the reinvestment in the squad, which is the most important thing from our point of view; nothing is a distraction from putting a successful team on the pitch.

“Putting Jurgen and the guys on the football side in a position to compete at the highest levels, that is always our focus and we see our contribution to that in the form of being able to run the business in a better way and being able to drive revenues to invest back into the team.”

Liverpool have also invested in their future in recent months by handing new contracts to Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Jordan Henderson, Joe Gomez, Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
