Kenya Films Classification Board (KFCB) CEO Ezekiel Mutua has announced that he would soon be introducing a ban that could land performers such as Esther Akoth alias Akothee arrested.
Speaking from the Board’s offices, Dr Mutua declared that the Board would ban public performances that “dishonour and contravene common decency and those that objectify women”.
He noted that the drastic move had been informed by public outrage following Akothee’s performance last weekend.
The KFCB boss further gave an example of the Betty Kyallo and Khaligraph Jones video that went viral saying that it could be categorized as promoting sexual content.
“The board is disturbed at the extent to which some famous artistes are going to attract audiences and relevance by exposing their private parts in public, gyrating in obscene ways and failure to uphold common decency in their public performances.
“While the board recognizes the constitutional rights to free expression, we shall not allow art to be used as a vehicle to degrade our culture or promote indecent behaviour.
“The board shall ensure that places where such performances take place are regulated and shows served with new terms and conditions that we shall announce in due course,” Dr Mutua stated.
He insisted that performers will not be allowed to display obscene behaviour “akin to pornography”.
He added that KFCB will not license shows that promote promiscuity and irresponsible sexual behaviour among young adults.
