Locals of Chinunda Village in Borabu, Nyamira County are reeling from shock after an empty coffin of a baby girl, who was buried on Tuesday, was retrieved from River Keera on Wednesday.
The baby girl was buried at her parents’ home in Enchoro-Mosobeti area.
The little girl’s grandfather, Mochumbe Moronya, confirmed that the casket, which was discovered abandoned on the river banks, was the one they had used to lay their loved one to rest.
“The deceased was my daughter’s child. I removed her body from a Gucha hospital mortuary on Monday and buried her yesterday [Tuesday, February 19]. I am shocked that they [suspected witches] exhumed her body and disappeared with it,” said Moronya.
Eye witnesses say they found a book next to the coffin, which contained names of suspected witches.
Area residents, thereafter, embarked on setting ablaze houses belonging to the suspected wizards.
As at the time of going to press, two houses had been razed to the ground.
Police say they are investigating the incident.
