Sub-Chiefs to register people using the electronic registry

Amid strong resistance from civil service groups, the government has gone ahead to implement the National Integrated Identity Management System (NIIMS) to create and manage Kenya’s population statistics.

The Assistant Chiefs will work with registration officials from the Interior ministry to roll out the pilot program ahead of the mass registration.

According to the CS for interior Karanja Kibicho, about 31,500 kits have been dispatched to various locations within the country.

The system will capture fingerprint details and facial features for all population with the exception of children under 6years. The registering officials will roam from homes to markets and schools as they register individuals.

Kenyans will be required to have their National Identity cards, Driving licences, KRA pin among other documents to register.

The registration process will involve an interview session where Kenyans will be required to provide only true information, failure to which will render one liable for a criminal offence.

After the registration, Kenyans will be given a card and a number that will give one access to government services and without which, one cannot access the services.

Last week still, Kibicho handed Sh300,000 to Alex Ireri Kithumbu, the web designer who has developed the software to be used in registration.
