Just how rich and cunning is billionaire Humphrey Kariuki?

The City Tycoon is currently under investigations by DCI detectives for grave economic crimes that could see him spend many years behind bars and part will millions in the process.

Mr. Kariuki was on Wednesday summoned to the DCI headquarters following the discovery of smuggled ethanol, 312,000 litres of illicit liquor and 21 million fake Kenya Revenue Authority stamps at the Thika-based African Spirits Limited on January 31, 2019.

It is during his interrogation that revelations were made that apart from being a Kenyan Citizen, he is also a Cyprus Citizen.

Detectives were taken a back since this realisation further complicates their attempts to unravel the shareholding structure of his various firms.

Besides his Kenyan passport, Mr Kariuki travels on a Cyrus passport, number K0627485, issued on May 19, 2016.

While Kenyans have a right to become dual citizens, the Citizenship and Immigration Act declares that “every dual citizen shall disclose his or her other citizenship in the prescribed manner within three months of becoming a dual citizen”.

Any Citizen that therefore fails to disclose their dual citizenship is liable to conviction, a fine not exceeding five million shillings or imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years or both.”

DCI boss George Kinoti has on his part confirmed that Kariuki will be charged in Court.

“We are questioning him on that issue since failure to declare dual citizenship is an offence,” Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti said.

Asked whether Mr Kariuki will be charged in court, Mr Kinoti retorted: “Why not? This is an offence.”

Yesterday evening, officials from the Department of Immigration handed over Mr Kariuki’s file to investigators as it emerged that the tycoon could end up in court over his Cyprus papers.
