Love gone sour on Valentine’s day

Adam Kiragu,27-year-old and a motorcycle operator committed suicide by hanging himself on a tree outside his in-laws house at  Eburru Trading Centre in Gilgil. This is after he was prevented from going back with the wife whom they had fallen out with a month ago. His wife had fled from home when an argument ensued forcing her to leave abruptly.

Residents  say he had  for some time quarreled with his wife who left him and was living with her parents. He said that his in laws were opposed to the idea of letting their daughter go back to him saying he had not reformed in his wayward ways. He left home but promised them he will be around for the night only for his body to be found hanging in one of the trees in the compound.

Anita Wangeci, a local leader says the institution of marriage especially among youths is under threat and requires concerted efforts to help save it. Many young people have resulted to alcohol and drugs use as their unions have become unbearable and has called on church leaders to play their rightful role to guide them during turbulent times. She added; ”The Church should stand up and offer the necessary guidance to our young people who face difficulties in their early years of marriage and by so doing incidences of suicide will be minimized.”

This came as leaders in the area decried the rising cases of suicide among youths with drugs and alcohol abuse being the major contributor.

A similar case was witnessed at Umoja, Nairobi, after the residents were shocked in the morning to find a man hanging on a tree. The man had hanged himself and had a bird on his head. When they tried chasing the bird away, it declined. This made the  onlookers walk away as they feared that the man’s suicide was associated with witchcraft.
