“Mchele” chronicles: 2 women charged with theft after spiking mans drink

Two women were arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts on Wednesday for allegedly spiking a man’s drink in Lang’ata and stealing Ksh1.9M from his bank account. The two, Joyce Britney and Florence Wangari appeared before Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi and were charged for administering a chemical substance known as Rohypnol on Fredrick Omondi.

Rohypnol is a tranquilizer about ten times more potent than Valium. The drug is available as a white or olive-green pill and is usually sold in the manufacturer’s bubble packaging. Rohypnol is also known as the date rape drug due to its amnesia properties when used illicitly.

The suspects spiked Omondi’s drink on January 17, 2019 at Ngei 11 Estate in Lang’ata after which they transferred Ksh1,940,000 from his account.

Britney allegedly stole Omondi’s mobile phone and ATM card, all valued at Ksh 23,000. She was also busted with a pack containing 7 one-milligram tablets of Rohypnol.

Hence, she faced several counts of electronic fraud, stealing and handling stolen property against the law.

Reports indicate that the two were further charged jointly with others not before the court, with conspiracy to stupefy in order to steal. Britney was released on a cash bail of Ksh1 million with an alternative cash bail of Ksh 300,000. On the other hand, Florence was released on a bond of Ksh 500,000 with an alternative cash bail of Ksh 200,000.
