Cattle Raids a Way of Life in Turkana

Guns, Raids, Violence and Killings is what categorizes the numerous cattle raid that happen in Turkana County.Bandits Raided two villages which were along the border of West Pokot and Turkana Counties., where they killed one person.Confirming the incident, Ompolion area Chief Joseph Korkimul said an unknown number of bandits ambushed Ompolion and Takaiwa villages where they conducted raids and drove away with the animals towards Turkana County.

The bandits stole two guns belonging to National Police Reservists (NPR) and made away with more than 500 cows and 270 goats on Sunday afternoon.“It was around midday when the bandits ambushed a boy who was grazing the goats. They abducted the boy and drove away with the goats. The police reservists engaged them in a fierce gun battle but they were overpowered,” he said.

Around 700 cattle was stolen in the raid which is perceived as a revenge raid since it come days after police shot dead a man and injured another as Kakong residents blocked the busy Kitale- Lodwar highway.The incident was perceived as a retaliatory attack against police officers in Turkana South Sub County.
