Why Martial is being compared to Ronaldo

Garry Neville has likened Anthony Martial’s goal against Fulham to one of Christiano Ronaldo’s during the latter’s time at Manchester United.

Martial scored a goal from an individual work after picking the ball from his defender Phil Jones to score and thereafter the Red Devils won the match 3-0 away to Fulham. The win ensured Man United clinched a top-four spot for the first time since the opening night of the league in August.

“I remember Cristiano Ronaldo scoring a goal over the far side some years ago that wasn’t too dissimilar. This is equally as brilliant. It’s put Manchester United into a fantastic position. How important has Martial’s contract signing been? Oh, hugely. Absolutely huge. It’s not unfair to say he was shackled under Jose Mourinho.” Neville told Sky Sports at the Craven Cottage.

Martial’s movement in the field further attracted Neville’s praise. The retired fullback added that the Frenchman is the best-attacking midfielder the club has ever had since Ronaldo.

“All you have to do is look at average position stats and you can see how much further back he was and, in some games, he was like an auxiliary left-back. That’s how far back he was. It pained United fans to see it and as Solskjaer alluded to, this is one of the best-attacking talents that United have had since Cristiano Ronaldo. That’s how important he is and he’s not without his faults of course. He’s only a young player but he still has much to learn but given the right guidance and more importantly, the freedom to utilise his talents, then we could really be seeing the start of something.” Neville added.

Man United will now focus on the Champions League round of 16 clash against PSG.
