Lesson to learn from JKUAT killing when you meet with muggers

Students from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) main campus in Nairobi staged a demonstration after the brutal killing of their colleague.

Tabitha Muthoni Mwangi, a First Year Student, was stabbed in the neck during a robbery leading to her death.

Sometimes back while i was walking home from Kasarani to Githurai three teenagers approached and asked me if i had a matchbox.

That’s odd, I thought, surely at least one of them must have a matchbox if they really are smokers – before remembering this is how most robberies start. Or at the least the ones I’ve seen on television do.

“I dont have ,” I replied, as i did not smoke but on giving them the answer , one of them pulled out a huge knife and the two asked me not to do something stupid as they laid blows on me and started ransacking me. Unfortunately the only thing in my pocket was a mulika mwizi phone and KSH50. Long story short, i managed to find the perfect opportunity and took off at high velocity speed leaving my phone behind.

After all, is that high score on Candy Crush Saga really worth risking your life for?

If you can’t run, just give the mugger what he wants. Your life is worth much more than your wallet or watch. Don’t fight back. Every self-defense expert I’ve talked to recommends this, and these are some tough mofos who could take on, and take down, most anyone they wanted — and yet they still say it’s not worth escalating the altercation into violence unless absolutely necessary.

Most muggers just want money from you. If you give them what they want, they’ll leave you alone. The majority of armed robberies end without injury.

When you give the wallet to your attacker, do so in a way that maintains distance between you and him. This may mean throwing it to him.

According to first responders on the scene of crime, Tabitha was in the company of another female friend when they were accosted by two thugs who demanded their valuables.

The deceased’s friend reportedly complied but Tabitha refused, prompting the gangsters to stab and violently rob her.

She was taken to the university hospital where she was declared dead on arrival ‘due to excessive bleeding’.

The university administration has since released a statement saying police have taken the deceased’s body to the Kenyatta University mortuary after the next of kin were notified.

“The extremely brutal manner in which Tabitha’s life was snuffed has understandably caused anxiety among JKUAT students and staff. The University is ready to work with security agents in Juja to investigate the incident and bring the culprits of this heinous crime to book. We urge our students to remain calm as police discharge their mandate,” the statement reads.

Muggers like to do their work where they can’t be seen, so if you’re out and about at night, stay in well-lit areas. Avoid dark alleys and the like. If you are out at night, keep a tactical flashlight on you. It allows you to identify potential threats and the bright light can momentarily disorient attackers.
