Ugandan files petition against ‘women’ being named as tourism attraction products

A section of Ugandan women have jumped in to oppose the move by the Ministry of Tourism to add curvy and sexy women to the list of tourism products.

Justice Care Uganda has demanded that the ministry of Tourism should immediately halt the campaign and issue an apology to women of Uganda.

“Our women have a lot to offer to our country’s development as they are working hard to raise their family & offer valuable service to our motherland.” reads their tweet.

According to NTV Uganda,  another woman has started an online petition to have the Miss Curvy Uganda contest cancelled.

The pageant was unveiled in Kampala on Tuesday by the State Minister for Tourism, Mr Godfrey Kiwanda, as part of tourism promotion.

“We have naturally endowed nice looking women that are amazing to look at. Why don’t we use these people as a strategy to promote our tourism industry?” Mr Kiwanda posed.

Women say the contest is demeaning as it objectifies their bodies as sex objects. Some have even claimed that it is the ‘modern form of sex slavery.

Primrose Murungi who filed the petition said that she personally feel attacked.

“This is degrading of women. In a country where women are grabbed by men while walking on the streets and now they have legalized it by making them tourist attractions is not fair. They are objectifying us and reducing women to nothing” she stated

She also called upon other  people to sign the petition so that the Ministry of Tourism may bow to their demands.

What do you think about this move by the ministry of tourism?
