Kenya experienced and recorded a decrease in accidents and deaths caused from the same in December. At least 335 people were killed in accidents in December last year, according to National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) which is less by 21 compared to 356 who died over the same period in 2017.
The drop in the number of deaths reported on roads was attributed to reintroduction of Michuki rules and enforcement of other road safety measures by the government through the Ministry of Transport.
To strengthen the fight in safety in our roads, Transport CS James Macharia, has appointed six new board members to the National Transport and Safety Authority.

The CS, through a gazette notice, announced John Ndege Obwocha, Meshak Kidenda, Alice Chepchumba Chesire, Francis Kirinya Mwongo, Moses Nderitu Gachemi and Catherine Njeri Waweru, to the authority’s board.
The officials will serve in the board for a period of three years, with effect from February 4, 2019 according to the gazette note.
The appointments were made after the authority, which was previously under the Ministry of Transport, was put under the Interior docket by President Uhuru Kenyatta through an Executive Order.
The restructuring is necessitated by an attempt to curb rampant corruption witnessed in the agency after revelations that NTSA staff were engaging in corrupt cases that endangered the country’s security.
On Friday, CS Fred Matiangi convened a crisis meeting with the authority’s officials following the increased cases of fake car number plates.
According to detectives, brokers within NTSA act as links between criminal gangs and employees of the motor vehicle registry to facilitate the vice which further fans the cause of the restructure.
In the month of January 2019, police impounded 26 vehicles with cloned number plates which came after following a car that was involved in Dusit D2 Hotel attack.
