Nyamira Priest cheated death during church service

A Catholic priest serving at Magwagwa parish in North Mugirango constituency, Nyamira, was almost lynched by angry congregants before the mass commenced on Sunday.

Led by the parish committee chairman, Nyangare Moturi, the faithful accused Father Walter Maticha of sexual assault and mismanaging of church funds.

One congregant alerted the priest of the planned attack, forcing him to sneak through the back door of his residential house.

The congregants allegedly wanted to beat him up before taking him to Bishop Joseph Mairura, who heads Kisii Diocese.

However, police from Ekerenyo Divisional Headquarters intervened, making sure the angry congregants did not damage church property and the priest’s residential home.

Speaking to the press on Monday, Moturi stated that congregants had complained about Maticha’s conduct several times but nothing had been done about it.

He added there was evidence implicating the priest to sexual assault of some ladies in the church.

Moturi also cited the priest was harassing heads of institutions sponsored by the church who failed to give into his monetary demands.

Speaking to People Daily, Father Maticha refuted the claims noting he had served in the church for 10 years and his record was known and that those undermining his leadership were not ‘serious Christians’.
